Amazfit Bip Lite – analysis and honest opinion

0

The Amazfit Bip Lite is one of the most popular smartwatches in a wide market full of models with a great diversity of designs, functions and budgets.

Its strengths are two: its great autonomy of a month and a half (according to the manufacturer) and its low price. This is the experience with the cheapest smartwatch in the Xiaomi ecosystem that I want to share with you below.

The Oldest But Also The Most Popular

The Amazfit Bip Lite was presented three years ago and despite its seniority, it is still one of the most popular watches on the market .

As its surname indicates, it is the simplest version of the Amazfit Bip, a family of smart watches from the Xiaomi ecosystem. What is the difference between them? Essentially the difference between the Lite and the plain Bip is that the latter integrates GPS.

The last to arrive in the family has been the Bip S, a model that starts from the Bip as a base and provides slight aesthetic improvements, a better screen and a faster chip.

On the other hand, the fact that the Bip and Bip S have GPS results in a slightly lower autonomy, but in all three cases we find very high and unusual autonomies in this type of device. We’ll talk about it later.

Design and display

This is what we find when we open your box

The Bip Lite S is a watch that arrives in a simple but very easy-to-look packaging .

After removing the packaging we will find:

  • The watch
  • The charger (adapter not included)
  • The instruction manual in several languages, including Spanish.

This pleasant sensation is maintained when we remove the strap and screen protectors and touch it for the first time.

A polycarbonate box with good finishes, light, resistant and attractive

You can see that we are looking at a low cost watch , mainly due to the polycarbonate case , a resistant and light material but, and sorry for the impression, trotter. Still, the finishes are good.

Another detail that shows how affordable the proposal is is the simplicity of its buckle.

Regarding the strap, it is made of a soft and comfortable silicone, with a size suitable for most people. In addition, it is interchangeable, so you can put another one that fits your style.

Seen as it is difficult to say that it is such a cheap watch and its design with a rectangular dial is quite reminiscent of the Apple Watch.

Of course, this feeling fades as soon as we scan the screen .

Overall, the experience it offers is acceptable, especially if we take into account the price range in which the watch moves, but it is important to be clear about what we can expect from it.

Its quality is rather low, inferior to activity bracelets such as the Samsung Galaxy Fit (although it is fair to say that this bracelet costs twice as much).

Thus, although the display will be correct on screens such as the main one or the navigation of the menus, when we are looking at the training interface or the notifications we will suffer their limited resolution .

Another aspect to improve is the touch of the screen.

It is true that it has a physical button on the outside that helps speed up the experience in certain operations, but the low touch sensitivity of the panel is remarkable…. especially if you have thick fingers and / or do not do well with technology.

The use of the clock’s dimensions can also be improved . And is that despite the fact that the box measures 3.2 x 3.5 cm, it has considerable edges, so the useful area is much less.

Good viewing outdoors, but the small letters don’t help

In its favor, it is worth highlighting the resistance of the screen against drops, bumps, impacts and fingerprints , thanks to the fact that the glass is Gorilla Glass 3 with an anti-fingerprint coating.

We also liked that the brightness can be adjusted.

The screen reads well outdoors, even in bright environments, and allows you to adjust the brightness. Of course, we will have to do it manually because it does not have an environmental sensor.

Initial setup

The explanation about its configuration in the manual is quite sparse , although fortunately the process is the simplest we have done in this regard.

Before starting, we recommend that you fully charge the watch with the charger that comes in the box.

From here, you will only have to install the Amazfit app, available for both iOS  and Android , either by searching for it in your respective app store or by scanning the QR code that is printed in the manual.

Although the manual talks about this app, the Xiaomi Mi Fit application will also serve you.

In any case, you will have to choose between one or the other. We have tested it with both and later we will tell you our impressions with both.

Once downloaded and installed, it will ask us to create an account by entering our data, password and an email, as is usual in these processes.

We follow the instructions and, when we have it ready, we open it.

In this initial phase we will be asked for data such as age, sex, weight and height. Although you are free to “cheat” the application, if you want to make the most of everything it offers to improve your physical condition, it is best to put the real data.

Synchronization

Synchronization is a very fast and intuitive process (even without following the instructions)

With the app open on the phone and the watch turned on by simply pressing the side button, we leave them close to each other to synchronize. We recommend that the watch is fully charged so that the lack of battery does not interrupt this process.

From the clock we will press “+” to add, we will choose “Clock” and “Beep / Beep Lite” and it will begin to search for it. And you will find it quickly (or that has happened to us 100% of the times we have tried).

A message to accept the pairing will appear on the screen of the smartwatch and, in a matter of seconds, they will be connected and ready to exchange information .

Sport activities

With the Bip Lite we can see an estimate of:

  • The steps we take every day
  • The distance traveled
  • Pulsations
  • Calories consumed

But in addition to monitoring basic activities of our day, we can also control training for sports such as running outdoors, treadmill, cycling and walking .

For indoor sports, it will use the accelerometer to record movement and provide data on time, distance, rhythm and heart rate and calories.

If we carry out activities outdoors (walking, running or cycling), it will complement this sensor with the GPS of our phone and will also save the location and route followed to view it from the application.

Within the watch itself we have options for training that can be very useful, such as the possibility of stopping automatically if it detects stops, warning us if our heart rate shoots up or if we go over steps or distance.

At the end of the training, we can go to the application to see a more detailed report of the record , with a history of the evolution of the parameters both numerically and graphically, even comparing them with other sessions.

From the application we can know in detail how our training has been

In practice, monitoring may be sufficient for a user who does little sport, but in my case, I have missed being able to record my tennis and crossfit workouts. And it is that four sports are very few .

Pulling the GPS from the mobile to record the movement also has an impact on the results, since it is slower starting the record and may have connection problems.

As we lack precision instruments to analyze the quality of measurements such as a chest strap, we have compared it with the record of our personal Apple Watch Series 5, observing that in some workouts it differed slightly with distance , and therefore, in the rythm.

In this sense, the Bip Lite is aimed at basic users who want a simple device to record their daily activity and generally know the data of their walks (although it falls short in terms of metrics and sensorics if we practice other disciplines and / or or we are demanding athletes).

Autonomy

Although the 200 mAh figure may not tell us too much, the 45 days that the battery lasts for “normal” use and up to 120 days on standby, according to the manufacturer, place the Bip Lite by autonomy well above other smart watches. regardless of its price.

To get an idea, reference models such as the Huawei Watch GT2 remain below two weeks and, well below, famous ones such as the Apple Watch Series 5 and the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2, with autonomies of less than two days.

Of course, we have to bear in mind that these figures provided by the house are usually optimistic in the sense that they are carried out in the most optimal conditions to prolong them, but it really has seemed to us that its battery lasts a long time.

In this sense, it is not the same to be a person who performs (and monitors) many workouts, or who spends the day receiving messages, to another with a more sedentary life and a quieter social life 2.0.

In the same way, we are not going to obtain the same results if we bet on the highest brightness or if we stick with the one that comes standard.

Stay with the image of the charger because you will not see much of it: the autonomy of the Bip Lite is very wide

In our case we have not skimped on anything: we receive many messages and calls and we are athletes. As the weather is also good, we have chosen to activate the highest brightness to see the screen even in the midday sun.

A week of heavy use later, the battery was at 74%, allowing us to use the watch uninterruptedly for a month without going through the plug. We have been vigilant and even on the busiest days it never dropped more than 5% .

Of course, the difference is notable compared to other models, which, although they are more ambitious in terms of functions or screen, something that obviously has a price, are not especially lighter than the Bip Lite.

In addition, when we run out of battery, we can charge it in approximately three hours , a fairly common time in this type of device, so the relationship between charge and autonomy is very good.

Interface and application

Lacking GPS, the Bip Lite is totally dependent on the mobile for this option. The good part is that, since you will have to carry the phone, you will also receive certain notifications from it. However, in general, the interface that we will use will be that of the clock itself.

The navigation and menu experience of the Bip Lite is good , mainly thanks to its simplicity.

We are facing an interface that is quite reminiscent of the bracelets. This is a main screen with:

  • The time and some data (by default comes the pulse and the steps taken)
  • Side scrolling to move through the six submenus
  • Vertical displacement within these

We liked the side button and its functionality with the interface.

It works by “waking up” the screen, something very useful to avoid accidental touches. Also, this button is used to go back in the menu, to the main screen.

It is also convenient that we can stop the record of physical activities with a long press on this button. And is that with the acceleration of sports and sweat, having to stop touching a small touch screen is not the best.

Finally, we can customize what action it performs with a long press on the main menu, which we have found to be well resolved.

This is what we find when looking at the clock

Let’s go back to the main screen, which is the one that we will see the most on a day-to-day basis.

If we slide up we can activate the “do not disturb” mode and if we slide down, see the pending notifications from the mobile.

They are two interesting shortcuts, but I would probably replace the one for notifications with a quick access to the brightness settings.

The main functions that we can do directly from the watch are:

  • See the status of our daily activity
  • Start monitoring a sports activity and see its data when it is finished
  • View the weather in our area (from mobile)
  • Set alarms
  • Start the stopwatch
  • Change the appearance of the sphere
  • Configure Side Button
  • Adjust brightness among six options,
  • Find the mobile (if we have it nearby)
  • Access the bracelet data as firmware or model
  • Turn it off
  • Factory restore

How is the application

If you are users of more products from the Xiaomi ecosystem, the design and colors will be quite familiar .

The interface is pleasing to the eye and easy to use, although the excess of options and its duplicity mean that handling it is not the fastest in the world.

We would be grateful if the options not available were not there and if you had a complete translation (there are still words in English).

Another aspect that can be improved is the synchronization speed: normally the process of sharing data or transferring activities takes a few seconds.

What is the most interesting thing that we can manage and see from it?

On the main screen we will see a summary of how our day is going : steps, hours of sleep and heart rate.

In the upper right corner we see two fundamental icons:

  • The “+” to add device
  • A kind of four-leaf clover that allows us to access all the data. For example, if we want to access the history of our steps, we must go there to view the statistics for today, the whole week or the whole month.

Conclusions and prices

Although it is not difficult to find it discounted without having to resort to import, we are facing what is probably the most affordable smartwatch from a well-known brand that we can buy .

In any case, we are talking about figures far removed from the market reference model, the popular Apple Watch Series 5 . Although it is fair to recognize that Apple’s proposal is considerably more ambitious in materials, finishes, functions and ecosystem, we are talking about an eight times higher price.

And it is because of functionality the Amazfit Bip Lite is closer to the world of activity bracelets , with the “premium” Xiaomi Mi Band 4 as the most popular model.

The similarities of both devices are high in terms of materials, interface, application and panel quality. Although the smart watch has the advantage of a larger screen that allows interacting and displaying information in a more comfortable way.

In any case, this is a smartwatch with a very high value for money for those who are looking for a simple and easy-to-use smartwatch simply to monitor their activity and, from time to time, record sports related to athletics.

Conclusions of our analysis of the Amazfit Bip Lite

We conclude our experience with the Amazfit Bip Lite with a pleasant sensation , which although it is far from perfect, it is overall very satisfactory considering its price and who it is aimed at.

We believe that it is important to be clear about the approach of this watch within the Xiaomi ecosystem so as not to be disappointed with respect to expectations: we are facing a smartwatch that by functions is practically an activity bracelet, but has the advantage of integrating a larger screen.

Thus, we can see common data such as steps, distance, calories, sleep or pulse .

We will also be able to control how our walks have gone and, even if from time to time we encourage ourselves to run or take the bike, control how our pace per kilometer or even the unevenness has been.

Of course, it is better to carry the mobile close by because the Bip Lite pulls the GPS to improve activity monitoring.

In addition, if we have the next mobile we can also receive notifications and even read WhatsApps and other messaging apps or our social networks . If they call us, we will not be able to answer because it lacks a microphone and speaker for it, but we will find out in time to pick up the phone and answer the call.

This set of simple features and metrics is wrapped in a device with a simple and robust design that, while it does not cost much to discover at a glance that it is affordable, it is more than enough for the day to day.

The interface and the display look good and navigating it is comfortable even for the less technological or in broad daylight.

And we cannot forget its enormous autonomy: a month of intense use is very attractive.

In short, the Bip Lite is a round proposal with a very high ratio between performance and price for more beginner users, who are satisfied with basic data or for those who want to invest little money.
